Michigan Natural Resource commission

NRC Information

ABOUT THE COMMISSION

Mission

Natural Resources Commission (NRC): Managing Michigan’s Wildlife and Fisheries

The Natural Resources Commission (NRC) plays a pivotal role in ensuring the sustainable management of Michigan's natural resources. With exclusive authority over regulations for game and sport fish, the NRC is dedicated to preserving our state's outdoor heritage.

Key Responsibilities

  • Setting Regulations: The NRC establishes rules and policies for game species and sport fishing to ensure sustainability.
  • Game Species Designation: The commission determines which species are designated as game and oversees the process for adding or removing species from the list.
  • Season Establishment: The NRC sets initial open seasons for hunting and fishing, balancing ecological needs with recreational opportunities.
  • Conservation Leadership: Collaborates with state agencies and stakeholders to promote responsible wildlife and fisheries management.

Commitment to Public Engagement

The NRC values transparency and actively encourages public participation. Monthly meetings provide a forum for citizens to:

  • Share their views on regulations and policies.
  • Stay informed about current conservation efforts.
  • Suggest changes or voice concerns about Michigan’s natural resources management.

These meetings are held at locations across the state, ensuring accessibility for all residents.
