Mission of Hunter's Safety Class

The Straits Area Sportsmen's Club continued with its mission of introducing today’s youth to the outdoors by co-sponsoring DNR Hunter Safety training. Hunter education courses teach new hunters responsibility, ethics, firearm safety, wildlife conservation, and wildlife identification, game care, survival, and first aid.

Who needs to go through Hunter's Safety Class

You need to successfully complete the class if you were born on or after Jan. 1, 1960, and will buy a hunting license in Michigan.  Many times other states may require that a Hunter show their card when purchasing their out of state license.

  • There is no minimum age requirement to take this online course.
  • You do not have to be a resident of Michigan to take this online course.

Comprehensive Instruction in Michigan Hunting Safety Education

This official training program is developed to meet the standards for Hunting safety education established by Michigan. Hunter Ed is the only safety course provider that develops print materials on behalf of government agencies responsible for Hunting laws and regulations.

What to Expect

This is 4–6 hours, depending on the number of students attending and will include:
· a classroom session
· outdoor shooting
· blood trailing
· demonstrations of a tree stand safety
· survival skills
Most of the classroom topics will pertain to Michigan-specific regulations and issues that are not covered in this online course. Be sure to have proper clothing for outdoor sessions.
After attending and passing the Field Day portion of the Hunting education requirement, you will receive your Hunter Education Certificate.

When Are Classes Held

A young person can also take the online course to find out more information on the class click on the tab above.  The student will need to find a field day near them to complete the class.
