Annual Kids Fishing Day

25th Annual Kid's Fishing Day!

Our 25th Annual Kid’s Fishing Day, June 8th, is during Michigan Free Fishing Weekend from 10 am to 2 pm at the Castle Rock Ponds in the Hiawatha National. The club partners with the U.S. Forest Service, Brevort Lake Assoc., and the Upper Peninsula Predator Callers for this very popular Kid’s Fishing Day each year.

2023 Kid's Fishing Day

Logan Dey and Smokey the Bear

Saturday June 10, 2023

It was worth the wait! After a three-year break because of COVID-19, on Saturday, June 10th, the Straits Area Sportsmen' Club held its 24th annual Kids Fishing Day at the Castle Rock Ponds.

Smokey the Bear greeted one hundred thirteen young fishermen who showed up on a drizzly morning and nice afternoon where they enjoyed fishing in the big ponds or our small children's fishing tank. There were an additional adults who took part and 29 Volunteers who helped the young fishermen.

The Straits Area Sportsmen's Club relies heavily on community donations. With cash and product donations, donations totaled over $20,000 this year! For example, the USFW Services Jordon Fish Hatchery donated one thousand Rainbow Trout, which was stocked into the big ponds for kids' fishing. This donation was worth $10,000! With donations to the SASC, the club bought 100 Rainbow Trout for the small children's fishing tank. Most were caught and released in the ponds; some were even taken home for a great meal. We gave out 95 fishing rods to the young fishermen, 70 of which were donated by the US Forest Service, and the other 25 were donated by others like Jay's Sporting Goods and Frank's Outdoor World.

Our Kids Fishing Day would not be possible without our sponsors: US Forest Service, USFWS Jordon Fish Hatchery, Enbridge, many more from around the community, and most importantly, our Volunteers who work to ensure a successful event. See you next June during the Free Fishing Weekend, and thank you to everyone!

    2022 Kid's Fishing Day

    April 2022

The June 2022 KFD is canceled again this year. We ran into some unforeseen problems with expenses and personnel requirements. Hopefully, we can overcome these problems and once again resume our kid's fishing day in 2023.

June 11th and 12th will still be Free Fishing Weekend, so keep the spirit alive and take your kids out and wet a line, or introduce someone new to fishing.

    2021 Kid's Fishing Day

    April 19, 2021

With a heavy heart, we have to announce, through many discussions regarding the 2021 Kid’s Fishing Day, we have decided to cancel the event due to COVID-19 Restrictions. This program is a Club favorite and a community event that everyone has enjoyed. The Club has been able to have Kid’s Fishing Day as an annual event going back to 1997; unfortunately, 2020 was the first time in those twenty-two years that we could not host. We are eagerly awaiting 2022, when we will be able to have our next annual event.
June 12th and 13th will still be Free Fishing Weekend, so keep the spirit alive by taking your kids out to wet a line or introducing someone new to fishing.
